It in one Bataclan is crammed by a varied public multi générationnel and horizons - banked-up beds as well there are crossed as will quadras, in “traditional” behaviour (jean, jacket with patches) that in costume tie - that SAXON cheek this evening. For the occasion, the balcony was open what was not the case at the time of the preceding passage of English on February 1, 2009. It seems obvious, aujourd' today, that the public is again let attract by the music a little more “ roots ”, typified 80 ' S. Initialement, this concert was envisaged to theElysée Montmartre, from now on closed. During balances, us exchange some words as for character accidental of this fire with one Nigel GLOCKER relaxed and opened, which regards as more than criminal these “incidents” which destroy historic buildings or forests centenaries, and which, also, regrets the cancellation of the Australian stages which were to launch this round. But the requirements of the peaufinage of the new album were determining in this decision. A Call To Arms will leave besides with a week delay, towards the end of May, with a packaging worthy of this name. And the album, whose chronicle will follow soon, is with the height in the concert of this evening: exceptional.

When the lights die out for the first time, the public, still sparse (it is only 19:00) discovers VANDERBUYST, Dutch trio which develops an incredible energy, showing that the scene is the place of all them be delirious visual. The challenge is all the more important for a trio, two thirds of the group being limited in their movements. But the Batavians went to good school and delivers a set old school and high colors which begin with an effective instrumental piece. Influences as well visual as musical start to return us in the past: spandex, scenic attitude, grimaces of the guitarist, fronts typified “ early Hard Rock ”, all is joined together to allure the public. Granted half an hour is used as well as possible, with a few moments of communication with the public (“ Are we here for sex and Heavy Metal tonight ? ” howls the singer bass player to introduce Filthy Love) which seems receptive. The trio pays homage at the end of the set to Gary MOORE while beginning again Don’t Believe A Word of THIN LIZZY follow-up of a last title, From Pillar To Post, as much tinted its influences: Traditional hard rock (70 ' S and 80 ' S) and NWOBHM. Then it is a group swims about it which leaves the scene, before returning there to remove the boards from its material.

Setlist VANDERBUYST : Fire Ordeal (instrumental), December, Filthy Love, To Last Forever, Tiger, Don’t Believe A Word (THIN LIZZY), From Pillar To Post

Hardly times to be refreshed with the bar (fifteen minutes were passed) and here are the lights which die out again. The four musicians of CRIMES OF PASSION, group supported by Biff BYFORD (SAXON) which lent its voice on one of the pieces of individual, enter in scene by tackling their set quietly before the vocalist does not arrive, who visually dissociates remainder of the group by his behaviour of scene. Not having of cease to smile, and to seek the fair sex of the glance, it also seems at ease that its voice is éraillée. CRIMES OF PASSION, in this step a little charming lady, addresses herself to all the public ones, offering to most sensitive or sentimental (ales, especially…) Love Is To Die For, mixture between ballade and Rock before attacking with the rapid and very effective Accidents (undoubtedly my piece preferred of this group this evening). Incontestably with the research of female approval, the introduced singer, by raising a simple matter (“ Any women want me to sing a love song ? ”) Blown Away, title which begins quietly before going up in power. The English are on the point of yielding the place to SAXON but offer to the public, as final, one Holy Diver (DIO) in homage to the missing singer.

Setlist CRIMES OFF PASSION: Intro, Dare You Try, Love Is To Die For, Accidents, Blackened Heart, Blow Away, Holy Diver (DIO)

the public does not know it yet, but SAXON this evening will propose l' quite simply to him; one in all the best concerts of this year, a concert equipped with a perfect setlist and imparable. Almost the two hours which will be passed do not know any idle period. Better: SAXON is with the signal of its form, and in its public makes profit. If the Nineties were not the best for the group, the new millenium sees it returning in force thanks to successful albums and a renewed interest of the public for the Metal typified 80 ' S. And SAXON seems ready to find the place which formerly was his: at the top.

After long a intro, SAXON déboule with Hammer Of The Gods, first piece of its new album (of which the exit was delayed one week, cf interview below) and puts office the points on I while connecting with Heavy Metal Thunder. The traditional ones ravel, stopped per moments of a new title, including very awaited Back In ’79, starting on the same topic of battery as the cultissime Denim And Leather, which him, will almost come to close this magic festival of hits. Because each piece makes fly, with l' instar from this from now on traditional I've got To Rock (To Stay Alive) which makes leap the public. SAXON draws from its vast discography the best of each album (or almost) naturally making honor with the small last with four extracts more than promising, including this When Doomsday Comes with the topic quite simply pumped on Perfect Strangers (DEEP PURPLE) but also on its first misdeeds. Wheels Of Steel, Strong Arm Of The Law and Denim And Leather see all gratifiés of at least three songs, while, without disavowing one ounce of its closer past, the last three and extremely successful albums in date are represented only by one piece each one. It is to say the importance that the public, in addition to the group, can grant to these old-fashioned things which did not take a wrinkle.

Whole, this evening, fact fly, the public putting an environment such as the place is transformed quickly into drying oven. Biff, moreover, in addition to communicating regularly with its public (which it holds in the hollow of its hand when it recalls that “yesterday one was in Bordeaux, the day before with Cleurmon Feurand. But this evening, it is PARIIIIS!!! ”), will nicely sprinkle the first ranks with the few water bottles at its disposal, promising that there will be still later. Paul QUINN, the other founding member still present, presents a pretty collection of guitars to us, and its complicity with Doug SCARRAT is palpable throughout this evening. Just like its pleasure of being there. To join again with success seems to have on the five musicians the effect of a cure of youth.

SAXON cheek this evening the chart of sobriety in its decorations and gains there incontestably in effectiveness. The sound is powerful and the spectacular lights. The group is even allowed, at the favourable moments, to play with lightings which post the words "Denim" and "Leather" (then, later, "Stop" and "Get Out"). A simple gimmick but which makes react the public to the quarter of turn. It then any more does not remain to conclude this concert, and Princess Of The Night advertisement the end of the hostilities. SAXON cost for two explosive recalls, composed of essential the Crusader and 747 (Strangers In The Night) initially, followed from Strong Arm Of The Law and Wheels Of Steel and shows with this impeccable concert that the old ones have still energy to resell. So much of energy, moreover, that one would forget of it almost the service of the two groups of opening which have to learn still much. Clearly, this concert of SAXON will go up on my podium of the best services of the year.

a last thing: in the comments in the concert d'ACCEPT in d' beginning; year, Paco said that, s' acting d' a round, they were to do that one evening out of two… Look at the dates of round of SAXON: some TEN d' days stages; sharpened almost without one day off! And Barry, the beater of VANDERBUYST me l' confirmed, SAXON gives each evening as much! Exceptional, I say to you.

Setlist SAXON : Hammer Of The Gods, Heavy Metal Thunder, Never Surrender, Motorcycle Man, Back In ’79, I’ve Got To Rock (To Stay Alive), Dallas 1 PM, Call To Arms, Rock’n’Roll Gypsy, Demon Sweeney Todd, And The Bands Played On, Man And Machine, The Eagle Has Landed, Play It Loud, When Doomsday Comes, Denim And Leather, Princess Of The Night. Recall: Crusader, 747 (Strangers In The Night). Recall 2: Strong Arm Of The Law, Wheels Of Steel

Discussion with Biff BYFORD, carried out to the Bataclan of Paris on May 12, 2011

One does not have as a practice at METAL INTEGRAL to publish interviews. But one does not have either as a practice to meet Biff BYFORD every days (mercy still Roger and Olivier for your reactivity). I do not think that this small distorsion can make evil… They is thus a few hours before it goes up on scene, that one Biff BYFORD relaxed receives me in its cabin of the Bataclan to speak about the new album, Call To Arms, of the Rock and the fans and the French Rock'n'roll and the success which meets again SAXON for some time. And sometimes to make it speak, it is enough simply to leave the paths beaten to pure and hard promotion.

Metalmp : Biff, according to what I included/understood, you chose to work with a new producer…
Biff BYFORD : Co-producer, yes.

Metalmp : I did not listen to it yet, but according to what I know, this new album, Call To Arms, join again with the sound of the Eighties.
Biff BYFORD: I will say rather than the album itself is in the spirit of the years 80, pas le sound. The songs are more dynamic, closer to than we made at our beginnings. As you will listen to it, you will include/understand and you will have your idea.

Metalmp : How was born this new album? Did you modify your way of composing the songs, to record them?
Biff BYFORD: One changed our approach of the composition a little, but not too. I modified my way of singing, to return towards something moreover “proletarian”, in the spirit of Never Surrender, Backs To The Wall… And the recording was done in a more direct way, plus live. It ya Mo

Comment by metalmp : Attends ! J'y travaille... Et les "show me your hands" sur Back in '79, ça ne se chante pas? Hein, dis? En tous cas, à Paris, SAXON a mis tout le monde d'accord. Vivement la suite.

Excellent rapport de concert, auquel je souscris du début à la fin (même si j'ai raté le premier groupe !). Au plaisir de te revoir bientôt MP ! ;)
Comment by metalmp : Eh, mon Phiphi ! Ravi de t'avoir croisé et ravi que nous partagions le même avis! Ceci dit, entre connaisseurs, hein... Peut être qu'un de ces jours on va pouvoir se poser et prendre le temps de boire une biere !
